Simon Lake developed experimental submarines as early as 1894 and built subs used in both world wars. In 1931, the Bridgeport-built Nautilus, became the first ship to sail under the polar ice cap. Jules Verne, Jr. bid the ship bon voyage. Pleasure Beach is visible in the background.
